New Scout Registration

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN OUR TROOP!

Before registering, please feel free to attend meetings to learn about our troop. Once you’re ready to join, please complete the registration process for your child. Participating adults must register and complete Youth Protection Training and a California background check. There are several steps, and this document will guide you through the process. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the registration coordinator for assistance. We’re more than happy to help!

Here's an overview of the steps

1. Register online through scouting.org using the Troop 966 link (included below) which includes payment for the National and local Council fees

2. Submit payment for Troop dues

3. Indicate Social Media preference

For adult participants and volunteers

4. Complete the online Youth Protection Training (YPT)

5. Complete California’s AB-506 requirement

STEP 1 - Register online through scouting.org using the Troop 996B or Troop 996G link

This step allows you to officially join the Scouting America organization and register with the Troop.

• You can also find our Troop using a zip code search.

• The final step of registering online through scouting.org is to submit payment for both the Greater Los Angeles Area Council (GLAAC) as well as the Scouting America organization fees. STEP 2 - Submit payment for Troop dues

The Troop dues for the 2025 year is $96 and are prorated by month ($8/month). Payment can be made by…

• Venmo to the Troop Treasuer, @Mukesh_BSA0966, please include the name of the scout in the comment field 

• Check payable to “Troop 966”. Checks can be brought to the next Troop meeting.

Troop dues are prorated by month, for example, renewing or joining at the start of the calendar year is $96 for the year, joining in March is $8x9 months remaining in the year or $72. Adult participants and volunteers do not pay dues.

STEP 3 - Social Media Usage

Troop 966 occasionally shares pictures of scout activities on our Facebook and Instagram accounts so families can see all the fun our scouts have on outings and at meetings. Please use this Google Form to indicate your preference.

Additional steps for adult participants and volunteers:

Before continuing, please read this note about Youth Protection and Mandated Reporter Training requirements: Both Scouting America and the State of California treat children’s safety very seriously. As a result, every registered adult must complete these steps. Only registered adults can attend overnight events. In total, these two steps will take up to a couple of hours.

STEP 4 - Complete the online Youth Protection Training (YPT) if yours is not current.

The YPT is a Scouting America-specific training to help create the safest and most secure environment possible for our Scouts.

• Once you have created and logged into your profile on my.scouting.org, from the top left corner of your page, click Menu then My Dashboard from the menu list. The My Training page will have a link to take the YPT course.

• Once completed, your training will automatically be updated in the system and associated with your Member ID.

• If you would like to attend an overnight event and your completion of YPT is too recent to be reflected in the system, you can print your YPT certificate and submit it to a member of the Troop leadership committee before the event.

STEP 5 - Complete California’s Mandated Reporter Training (AB-506) if you have not yet already. 

In 2022, the State of California passed Assembly Bill 506 that requires volunteers of a youth service organization to complete child abuse and neglect reporting training as well as a background check. Scouting America, which runs Scouts BSA, considers every registered adult as a volunteer, thus requiring completion of the AB-506 requirement.

• California Mandated Reporter Training

  • The GLAAC link contains another link to take you to the California Mandated Reporter Training website. Complete the “Volunteer” training there.

  • You will need to complete the training, take the exam, and purchase the certificate at the end.

  • Be sure to save the completion certificate at the end of the training.

  • Once completed, go back to the GLAAC link to submit your information and upload your training certificate.

  • If you’ve previously completed a more comprehensive version of the training (e.g. School Personnel), you do not need to take the Volunteer version; simply upload your current certificate instead.

  • Also send a copy of your training certificate to registration@anzapack996.org for our records.

• Background Consent Form

  • From the GLAAC link, download and complete the Background Consent Form.

  • Upload the completed form.

• Live Scan Background Check

  • The GLAAC link provides both a "no paperwork" and a "Live Scan Form" option for completing the background check.

  • Both options require fingerprinting and background check fees as well as a visit to a Live Scan service provider.

  • If choosing the "Live Scan Form" option, make sure to bring your completed Live Scan Request Form to your appointment.

  • Fees may vary depending on which service provider you choose.

  • The GLAAC links provide a list of Live Scan service providers in the area.  Choose one convenient for you and make an appointment.

  • The Live Scan completion should be uploaded once your background check is completed. You don’t need to submit completion through the GLAAC link.

  • We recommend you save your receipt in case your fingerprints are not legible. Your service provider should retake them at no additional charge.

  • Please send an email titled “AB-506 Completed” to torrancebsatroop966@gmail.com when you’ve completed all three steps.
